July 22, 2010

Update on new home for CGM-13B SN# 59-4871 (Wildwood Mace)

In order to keep Missileers “in the loop” concerning the “Wildwood Mace,” I (Frank Roales) submit the following:

An Engineer’s drawing and model for the new Indiana Military Museum has been completed and the model has been placed on display in the George Rodgers Clark National Memorial’s visitor’s center in Vincennes, IN.

Phase 1 of the Museum’s program has been completed with the purchase of 14 acres of land near the National Memorial, adjacent to the French Commons used for the “Spirit of Vincennes Rendezvous” in the main historical area of Vincennes.

Present plans for Phase 2 call for the remolding and adapting of two buildings now on this property starting at the end of 2010, with the target of moving the present storage and restoration facilities to the larger of the two and the present museum in to the other. This will call for moving all items in storage and those on display at the current museum to the new more centrally located facility. This facility is somewhat smaller than the present location so some condensing of present displays will need to be done and while some display space will be temporally lost in this part of the plan, the new location will bring more visitors to the museum and help with the final phase of the museum’s plans. This timetable is dependent on the raising of approximately $300,000 before next year’s season.

In the final phase (Phase 3), funds estimated at 10 million dollars will be raised and a state of the art 69,000 sq. ft. main structure as seen in the pictures will be built. Building 2 will then be used for traveling exhibits, education and meeting facilities.

As now shown on the engineering model the Mace will be displayed near the entrance fountain at the main entrance road to the museum (see photo). What a great place for “our bird”

For those of you that don’t already have a copy, this is great opportunity to get a discount on U.S. Air Force Tactical Missiles, written by TAC Missileers George Mindling and Bob Bolton.

Be sure to act fast. The discount is available only through August 15th.

“U.S. Air Force Tactical Missiles” is an excellent, comprehensive history of a very little-known aspect of the development and operational deployment of American guided missiles in the early days of the Cold War. The title may lead one to believe that the book is a fairly broad outline of tactical missiles developed during that period. But it really covers just one system–the Glenn L. Martin Company’s TM-61 “Matador” turbojet-powered cruise missile and its follow-on, the upgraded TM-76 “Mace.”

The level of detail in U.S. Air Force Tactical Missiles is remarkable. The authors start out with an assessment of the world’s first practical,… More >mass-produced cruise missile–the German V-1 (“Vergeltungswaffe Eins,” or “Vengeance Weapon 1″) “flying bomb” that Hitler used against England and other European targets in World War II. I thought I knew a lot about the V-1, but I learned things I never knew when I read this book. Some of the technical details about its design, construction and method of operation have never, to my knowledge, appeared in print before, at least not in readily accessible form. The authors apply the same level of detail to the story of the design, development, flight testing and overseas deployment of the “Matador” and “Mace,” which trace their lineage directly back to the V-1. Much of “U.S. Air Force Tactical Missiles” is based on reminiscences of former “missileers” with first-hand experience in the care and feeding of “Matadors” and “Maces” in the field. As such, it has the flavor of an “oral history” in which people and their experiences play at least as important a role as the technology.

Very little has been written about America’s early cruise missiles. As far as I know, U.S. Air Force Tactical Missiles is the only available book-length treatment of this relatively obscure subject. An interesting, in-depth and readable volume, U.S. Air Force Tactical Missiles deserves a place on the bookshelf of every serious aerospace history buff.

Some members have inquired about Missile Badge (aka Missileman Badge) requirements. Joe Perkins was kind enough to provide the following information. Thanks Joe!

Note: See comments following the requirement descriptions.

General Officers: Wear the basic badge, representative of the organization’s mission, upon entering a headquarters staff or command position, unless previously qualified for a higher level badge. Wear the next higher level badge after 12 months. Continue to upgrade to next higher level every 12 months.

Officers: Wear the basic badge after graduating from technical school (or after attaining a fully qualified AFSC when technical school is not required). Wear the senior badge after 7 years in the specialty and the master badge after 15 years in the specialty. Officers may verify their constructive service credit to determine eligibilityfor award of badges by contacting HQ AFPC/DPAMU, 550 C Street West Suite 27, Randolph AFB, TX 78150-4729.

Enlisted: Wear the basic badge after completing technical school. Wear the senior badge after award of the 7-skill level, and the master badge as a master sergeant or above with 5 years in the specialty from award of the 7-skill level. EXCEPTION: Chief Master Sergeants crossflowed into a new CEM Code wear the basic badge of their new career field upon award of the CEM Code, the senior badge after 12 months, and the master badge after 5 years.

July 13, 2010

Since posting the information above, I have received numerous comments that “Missile Badge Requirements” were not always defined this way…

“The criteria changed constantly, and when I got my Master Missileman badge, the requirement to be a Master Sergeant did not exist. I attached my orders and the requests for both the Senior Missileman Badge and the Master Missileman Badge, both of which had to be submitted by the requester. The orders were not automatic.”

“I was awarded my Senior Missileman Badge, 10 September 1965, I was an A1C (i.e. E4) with a 5 level, PAFSC and CAFSC of 31453M, and the award at that time was based solely on time served on the qualifying missile system rather than skill levels or rank.”

“If I remember correctly, the Senior Badge was five years in direct support, and Master badge was seven years.” (e.g., no specified skill level requirement)

The Association of Air Force Missileers (AAFM) April 1993 Newsletter (www.afmissileers.org/newsletters/NL1993/Apr93.pdf, page #3) contains a good article by Maj. Greg Ogletree (Ret.) that describes the history of the badge from its inception through 1993.

Sometime after 1993, the badge was phased out. In 2008, it was reinstated. See Association of Air Force Missileers June 2008 Newsletter, page #1.

Mr. Mindling,

I found your site (www.mace-b.com/38TMW/) by mistake, ordered and completed your well written book. The memories that it brought back set me on a mission. I lost all my USAF memorabilia in a fire and am trying to get in touch with my old launch crew, and maybe get a copy of the crew photos especially the one taken in front of the missile monument. Launch Officer was a LT Gross, (real tall skinny guy with dark hair). I can’t remember the others names but the faces are pretty clear. Funny what times does and doesn’t do. We were in Bitburg from sometime in late summer or fall of 1964 to Oct 67. Three of my running buddies were; Don (TEX) Walters, Wayne Douglas, and Walt Stoll. If any of your members were in Bitburg at the same time, and know me or any of the mentioned guys please forward them my email address.
