2015 Reunion Survey

Survey

    Input is requested ASAP!!!

To all members of TAC Missileers that may be planning to attend the 2015 Reunion in Boston:

Bill Simpson and I have been in contact with hotels in the Boston area and have found out that staying at the hotels is going to be a very expensive venture.

To try to stay away from the high cost and the crowds, Bill and I decided we needed to stay away from the months of Sept./Oct. We decided to try to hold the reunion in late Aug. Of course this would be in the warmer part of the year and would not afford us the "fall" colors that I'm sure everyone would like to see.

At present I have been in contact with the Embassy Suite at the airport. They have quoted a proposal of $195.00 a night if the reunion is held in August. If we move into the months of Sept./Oct. the cost jumps to $249.00 a night plus tax, making the rate $268.00 a night. On top of this parking has to be figured in at $30.00 a night, for those that drive to the reunion. Of course we all have to eat which is an added expense.

I'm concerned we may not have much of a turn out for this reunion because of the expense and need to know how everyone feels about this. We of course will move forward with the planning if it is determined the expense will not deter many of the members attending the reunion. If it is determined we won't have much of a turnout, we would need to decide if we want to move the reunion to a less expensive location. At the San Antonio Reunion the other 2 cities on the ballot were Denver & Orlando. Boston won out with 34 votes, Denver had 32 votes, and Orlando had 24 votes.

Please let the officers know your thoughts and wishes of what we need to consider. Again we will adhere to the membership's wishes regarding whether to go ahead and hold the reunion in Boston, or try to locate to a less expensive city.

    Thanks,
    Max Butler

There is a lot to see around the Denver area. Wings over the Rockies air museum is on what used to be Lowery AFB. Of course there is the AF academy, Peterson AFB, and possibly Cheyenne Mtn. if they will let us in.

Some of the Orlando Area Hotels offer really good reunion rates for Military Reunions. Also, there is always Shades of Green at Disney which is a military hotel. They also have an office which helps reunions which want to stay at other Disney Area Hotels, negotiate very good rates.

It seems to me that these details should have been obtained at an earlier date. I was not planning on going to Boston because of the high cost of lodging, parking, food, and cost of transportation. If

Why not Boston Area away from the Airport. The most expensive lodging is always at the Airport or downtown. The area has several suburb locations that might prove to be more reasonable. Just a thought.

Holding the Reunion at Boston, doesn't have any significance other than being offered in the East to move it around so hopefully more would attend given that geographic location.
It is very unlikely that many would attend, given those over priced room rates, and additional parking fees as well.
Keeping it in the East, with Orlando, is too hot in August. And since
there was recently a gathering there this past Spring, it seems redundant especially for those that made it then.
The important part is continuing to hold it, since our Missileer members won't be around forever.
I've attended Ohio-09, San Diago-11 and San Antonio-13, and "?"-15 wherever it will be held, I'll likely be there, especially if it is
    in September.

Thanks for giving this a lot of thought and for asking for input. Costs, climate and a pleasing area are important considerations. Pricey east and west coast locations would not be appealing to us, especially during hot summers. Attractive locations with comfortable weather that may less crowded and touristy could be considered, such as Norfolk, VA, Traverse City, MI, or some locations in NC. Denver or Colorado Springs aren't bad, but we've had all we need of Orlando.

I will attend wherever we have the reunion at. That said I agree with many of comments, Boston is too expensive and too many people. The airport is not a good place to stay to see Boston, but staying downtown costs even more. I am afraid we will have a very low turnout due to the cost in Boston.

The only reason to go to New England in the fall is for seeing the tree colors in all their glory. Its too hot in August and all the tourist are still out. We had planned a three week vacation around the reunion but now we will not attend. In Denver, the aspen leaves change around the last week of September, the kids are back in school and the snow season is still a month away. Denver is out of the mountains so the hotel prices remain relatively stable the year around. If anyone wants to go site seeing in the mountains, the winter ski season has not started so the hotel prices in the mountains are still low.

Max; People who live in the Northeast have not been able to attend those held in the western states due to the cost of airfare.
If it is held in Boston, I will be driving to New Hampshire and staying with my daughter there. That's a lot better than the almost $2000 it would have cost to fly to San Antonio. Orlando would be my second choice because it is always cheaper to fly there from the Northeast.

*Boston is too expensive and transportation is crazy.
*The Denver airport is a long way from anything!! Is there anything left of Lowery AFB?
*Orland airfare is reasonable, plenty of hotels and a lot of entertainment for the family. Also, a trip to the cape or air boat rides would be fun.
*Tampa is also a good alternative. Less than an hour from Orlando, cheep hotels, cheap airfare and McDill AFB may be willing to host a party.
*Albuquerque, NM is inexpensive, has the Nuclear Weapons Museum and a Air Force base.

With the estimated cost of traveling to the Boson area, staying a few nights. plus food and drink, it appears the cost is going to deter many from attending. I for one, will not make a trip to spend in te neighborhood of arrroximatelu $1500 to possible $2000 for a few short days, ot includiong any tours that may be available.

Diane and I are looking forward to going to Boston, for the Reunion of course, but also to again see the historical sights; where it all started. Leaves color in Boston is immaterial to us. August would appear to be, price-wise, best for Boston, which can be cold in October.

Orlando is our 2nd choice. It is just a 1 & 1/2 hour drive from our home. Orlando, however, is also quite expensive, due to the surrounding theme parks. A Cape Canaveral charter bus tour might be attractive to those who didn't make the Florida Mini-Reunion, again complete with Hangar R. (I'd probably go to the Cape again, just for a repeat visit to Hanger R.) I understand that Orlando would be a repeat reunion location for TAC Missileers. August in Orlando is very hot. The place is crammed with families with kids, who are in school in October.

We would plan to attend, whichever location is chosen by the membership intending to attend.

I would vote for (1) Boston in August, (2) Orlando in October, (3) Denver in whatever month is best out there.

Actually, all sites are a wash. Boston is expensive, but a short drive. Denver and Orlando are not too different a drive, but possibly cheaper. I prefer Orlando, but we would attend Denver.

Given the number of western sites recently, it would be nice to do some place in the middle, at least. What is wrong with Branson?

    Good luck on this. Ken

The last reunion in Denver was nice and the side trips to Coors and the AF Academy was nice there was not much else to do there.

I have never been to any of the reunions due to poor health, but would love to attend this one if it were in Denver. I missed the one in San Diego,CA, as it was just before I joined. Too bad, as San Diego is only 90 miles from me. July and August are probably better as the weather turns in September. I hope to see everyone this year, as it may be my last.

I will attend wherever the reunion is held as long as it is not August 10 to 20. I understand the objections to price. You might find a more acceptable price by moving the location to the western suburbs of Boston. There is a tremendous amount to do in the Boston area such as Lexington and Concord, the Boston Commons and the Freedom Trail, just to name a few. If it's not in Boston, my preference would be Denver. Orlando is OK if it is in late September or October.

Being from Lowell,Ma I can tell you that if you get out of Boston proper and go to the surrounding towns, you can book accomodations much cheaper! The travel can be cut down by taking one of many trains from there to Boston. Matter of fact, why not one of the cities in NH. That way you could enjoy the fall colors (if you hold it in late October or early Nov. (I would suggest Manchester,NH)

It is definitely not a good idea to stay at the airport. Surely there must be some less expensive hotels in the suburbs. Most of the previous reunions have been in the west. I believe there is a lot of things to see and places to go in the boston area.

To me it didn't used to be where you had a reunion as long as you got to be with my ole Air Force brothers. I could enjoy 4 days and nights sitting around a camp fire, telling stories about the times we had together back when were young and thought we'd live forever, as we did with our 887th TMS reunion here in 1985. Health and finances have changed this situation for a lot of us. We loose more of our comrades every year. Thanks to the guys who put these reunions together so we can enjoy being with those who are still with us and relive the memories of those who are gone, but not forgotten. I will try to attend if Denver is selected.

The room rates and costs of eating in Boston are quite high priced. Boston would be a nice history location, however, Denver (Lowry AFB)is the place where all or most of the Matador/Mace people received their training. I am sure Denver would bring back a lot of fond memories. Orlando would be my second choice for the same reasons.

I did not answer the above questions. Sorry. I voted for Boston because I wanted to go to Boston. I realized immediately, having been there before and even commenting to Max or someone, that it would be too expensive for the average person. Probably not too expensive but most would not be willing to spend the money.
I will go anywhere. Orlando is hot always. I live here. Love it.
Denver is another place to visit, been there many times.
Would like to consider Vegas or Dakotas to see Grand Canyon or Mount Rushmore. Final answer, I will go where majority wants to go. I have no preference. Main emphasis is visitation with secondary sightseeing.

Why not Boston Area away from the Airport. The most expensive lodging is always at the Airport or downtown. The area has several suburb locations that might prove to be more reasonable. Just a thought.

You have placed a bias in the survey by showing the room rates of September with tax included ($ 268). I vote for Boston no matter what the cost.
How about an area just outside of Boston; even 50 or 60 miles away-with an all day bus trip to see Boston and its beautiful sites?

It is definitely not a good idea to stay at the airport. Surely there must be some less expensive hotels in the suburbs. Most of the previous reunions have been in the west. I believe there is a lot of things to see and places to go in the boston area.

There is a lot to see around the Denver area. Wings over the Rockies air museum is on what used to be Lowery AFB. Of course there is the AF academy, Peterson AFB, and possibly Cheyenne Mtn. if they will let us in.

Some of the Orlando Area Hotels offer really good reunion rates for Military Reunions. Also, there is always Shades of Green at Disney which is a military hotel. They also have an office which helps reunions which want to stay at other Disney Area Hotels, negotiate very good rates.

I for one, will not make a trip to spend in te neighborhood of arrroximatelu $1500 to possible $2000 for a few short days, ot includiong any tours that may be available.

Ken

Yes I think Boston is too expensive.
The last reunion in Denver was nice and the side trips to Coors and the AF Academy was nice there was not much else to do there.
I think Orlando offers the best and in fall good deals can be made with the kids back in school.

The airport hotel does not sound inviting. Perhaps a Boston suburb location could be found, however, we will be attending wherever the reunion is held. Thanks to Bill and Max for your time and effort in planning this reunion.

Although I looked forward to a reunion closer to my New England residence, those Boston rates are ridiculous for a group stay. I'd opt for Orlando.

I would suggest moving outside of Boston in Sept/Oct if priced below the 180-200 mark, or just go to Denver or Orlando instead.

Not sure about Boston. Denver is nice, as well as Orlando, or San Antonio. More likely to attend one of those due to distance traveled, other than Orlando of course.

It seems to me that these details should have been obtained at an earlier date. I was not planning on going to Boston because of the high cost of lodging, parking, food, and cost of transportation. If
you decide to go to Denver I would attend the reunion

The only reason to go to New England in the fall is for seeing the tree colors in all their glory. Its too hot in August and all the tourist are still out. We had planned a three week vacation around the reunion but now we will not attend. In Denver, the aspen leaves change around the last week of September, the kids are back in school and the snow season is still a month away. Denver is out of the mountains so the hotel prices remain relatively stable the year around. If anyone wants to go site seeing in the mountains, the winter ski season has not started so the hotel prices in the mountains are still low.
